FEVER:
Sometimes fever has beneficial
effects also in Syphilis, Gonorrhea
and Rheumatoid Arthritis. In these
situations pyreto therapy is good.
Further, the initial state of fever
causes the interferon mechanism to
flourish.
There
are detrimenting effects of fever as
well. They are:
Wastage of Nitrogen and weight loss
due to increased velocity of
metabolism. Sweating aggravates
electrolytes less. Cardiac action is
also increased.
Unpleasant symptoms are observed
which vary from mild to severe
states like drowsiness, coma and
convulsion. It is only in these
deleterious states that anti-pyretic
therapy is to be considered. The
other extreme examples are heat
stroke and post-operative
hyperthermia, in shock and heart
failure.
While
diminishing the fever, certain
accompaniment of the diminution has
to be considered, as profuse
dia-phoresis and sense of
exhaustion. Fluid may be needed in
such cases, as it may accentuate the
shock. In case of prolonged
low-grade temperature,
differentiation has to be done
between one who is innocent (as in
few children and in some young
ladies) and is harmful.
